Think Tank #8 Review

IMG130064The conclusion to the second, stupendous story arc for one of the biggest surprises in comics, Think Tank issue eight deals with the shocking death of Colonel Harrison that occurred last issue. It also is an opportunity for writer Matt Hawkins and artist Rahsan Ekedal to sow the seeds for the upcoming third story arc that deals with some of the ramifications from the current “Genetics” arc.

I think the most important aspect of issue eight of Think Tanks is its ability to as rhetorical and at times existential question. For example, one of the lynchpins of this final issue is David’s dealing with Harrison’s death, even though he did not pull the trigger of the gun. The irony that David designs weapons, especially the targeting of specific DNA, and Harrison has a conscience, trying to stop the use of the weapon, is pretty powerful and compelling to the overall story of Think Tank and David as a person and a creator of death, per say. It’s amazing that the human element of the characters really shined in this issue, especially the scenes of Manish and his wife at Harrison’s funeral. And, by the end, you will see the seeds sown for the next arc, “Breakout”, as Mirra reappears in what readers will consider a surprising twist. Will David do what’s right when called upon by his government?

So Think Tank continues to cut a swath of quality story telling across the medium. Rahsan Ekedal has pretty much mastered the look and design of the human form, as his characters are always rendered realistically and take on a very organic quality when presented on the page. The inks and washes, the tones, bring out a real world feel the book thrives upon. Matt Hawkins always throws in his charismatic charm and humor in an otherwise serious story, but always achieves the right tone and message… in this case, Think Tank teaches readers that there is that difference between “existing” and what it takes to “start living”. Kudos to the creative team and this book, as Think Tank continues to be a true item of interest monthly at comic shops. Issue eight is out Wednesday, June 26, and it wraps up the second story arc.
